Il suo amico Lorenzo lo accompagna nelle scorribande che mettono alla prova l'efficacia dei suoi marchingegni e la bella Lisa, cui Leo ha dedicato un poetico ritratto, segue le sue imprese con un interesse che va oltre la semplice amicizia. Quando un incendio devasta la fattoria del padre di Lisa, Leo decide di andare alla ricerca di un tesoro sommerso con l'aiuto di una delle sue invenzioni: lo scafandro per escursioni sottomarine. Se non abbiamo specificato che il Leonardo in questione è il giovane da Vinci, c'è un motivo: ed è che purtroppo il personaggio storico è solo un pretesto per raccontare un'avventura della quale è protagonista un ragazzo coraggioso e ricco di inventiva. Non si mostra mai come Leonardo arrivi a creare le sue invenzioni, quale sia l'intuizione alla base dei suoi progetti, come nasca e si sviluppi un'idea geniale: tutto quello che avrebbe reso davvero interessante e significativa la scelta di trattare, attraverso l'animazione, uno dei protagonisti della Storia italiana assai noto a livello internazionale.
