Modern true crime docu-series like "The Keepers, " "Making a Murderer, " and "The Jinx" owe a great debt to Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's award-winning chronicle of the fascinating case of Michael Peterson. Perhaps knowing the debt that their true crime series owe to it—as well as being aware that anyone who likes their buzz-building mysteries will fall for this one hard—Netflix has picked up the original 10-episode series (8 episodes aired on BBC/Sundance in 2005 with 2 more added in 2013) and added 3 brand-new episodes to catch viewers up on where the Peterson case is today. It's a must-watch for anyone interested in true crime shows as it's not only a fascinating case on its own but really the template for so much that's on television and streaming services today. On December 9, 2001, North Carolina resident Michael Peterson, a writer and former reporter, called 911 to report that his wife Kathleen was at the bottom of the stairs in their home, bleeding profusely.
However, the medical autopsy found that Kathleen had sustained a litany of severe injuries, including a fracture of the thyroid neck cartilage and multiple lacerations to the top and back of her head. The injuries were consistent, it was concluded, with blows from a blunt object. Kathleen died from blood loss at the bottom of the stairs around two hours after sustaining the injuries. Michael Peterson was the only other person present, and was charged with her murder. Peterson's misrepresentation of his time during the war was used to attack his credibility, while the reveal that he was bisexual and apparently engaged in affairs with other men poured further fuel on the fire. The prosecution alleged that Kathleen had found out and wanted to end their marriage. That Kathleen had a $1. 5million life insurance policy was also a factor. And then, of course, there was Elizabeth Ratliff, who had also been found dead at the bottom of some stairs years before, with Peterson the last person to see her alive.
The final three episodes of The Staircase catch up with Peterson in his life outside of prison before he entered an Alford plea in 2017. Under the plea, Peterson is free as as a convicted felon after pleading guilty to murdering his wife. Taken as a whole, with all 13 episodes available together on Netflix for the first time ever, the series paints a grim portrait of the criminal justice system. De Lestrade's interest was never in the questioning Peterson's guilt — his intent was to paint a broad picture of how Peterson would be treated inside the system until his final plea deal. While he's not convinced of Peterson's innocence, de Lestrade said the process of making the series made it clear to him that Peterson did not receive a fair trial. Peterson was the only suspect they were interested in, he said. No matter how much money a person has, it's tough to fight a whole system. "Even when you have thousands of dollars to defend yourself and you have a smart lawyer, you have to get very lucky to get out, " he said.

Peterson has since admitted that the shrapnel wound was actually from a car crash after the war, and there was no evidence at all that he was ever awarded a second medal. Peterson also wrote a newspaper column that was heavily critical of his local police force, something that would come back to bite him in later years. Peterson was married to Patricia Sue Peterson and the pair lived in Germany for a time, becoming close to neighbour Elizabeth Ratliff and her family. When Ratliff died in an accident in 1985, Peterson even adopted her children. And how did Ratliff die? Why, she fell down the stairs...
