I am in love with Fado. I love the pure emotion at the heart of traditional Fado singing, its vulnerable expression of the Portuguese soul; no flash, all depth. And so it was with both dread and joy that I approached this new documentary. I am familiar with other documentary films by Dziubyna and have admired his naturalistic, no-nonsense style of capturing the unadorned truth of his subjects. In his new documentary, FADO, he brings his one man crew into small Fado cafes, restaurants and venues in Porto and quietly films the singers and audience reactions under the given light. So far, so good. If he had used a larger crew, set up lights and run cables across the floor it would've surely interfered with the sensitive atmosphere sustained by the spirit of Fado. Some might criticize the lower production value here as "unprofessional"; ignore them. Dziubyna's choice to shoot FADO guerilla-style verite wisely bypassed the self-consciousness, preciousness and pretension that would've ruined the intimacy captured in his film.
