Manuela Sepulveda works five days a week as a home health aide with two elderly clients —one 99 years old, the other 75. As the coronavirus ravages the country, Sepulveda says her job is more important than ever, but going to work frightens her. "When they told us we had to keep working, I was scared, but it's also important to take care of elders who need our help. A lot of them live alone, " she said. Sepulveda lives in Gage Park with her 11-year-old son and her husband, a security guard at Midway Airport, where several employees have tested positive for the virus. "We make sure to take off our clothes as quickly as we can when we get home and keep our distance from others, but it's stressful leaving the house every day, " she said. For most black and Latino workers, sheltering in place and making ends meet are mutually exclusive. About 84% of Latinos and 80% of African Americans couldn't work from home in the pre-pandemic economy, according to a recent analysis of government employment figures by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank based in Washington, D. C. The analysis also found only 10% of low-wage workers can clock in from home, compared to two-thirds of high-end earners, such as financial analysts and business consultants.
Monroy was hit by a stray bullet Dec. 14 while walking home from her job at a clothing store. She died the next day. Chicago police said she wasn't the intended target. Detectives have located a pickup truck they think was used in the drive-by, but there still was no one in custody a week after the attack. Dafne Hernandez, a junior at Juarez and one of Monroy's best friends, said she's been having trouble processing Monroy's death, but "the emptiness" started to sink in during the service. Hernandez said she met Monroy in seventh grade, and they'd been friends for five years since. A smile beamed across Hernandez's face as she recounted going to a school dance with Monroy. "Everybody was in a huge circle and dancing, but we were outside of that, doing our own thing, laughing and dancing, " Hernandez said. "She'd always reminded me of that because it was such a fun day. Bloomberg made the remarks during an interview with PBS Newshour, as he promoted his Young Men's Initiative, a $127 million, three-year program funded in part by Bloomberg's charitable organization, financier George Soros' Open Society Foundations, and the city of New York. "Blacks and Latinos score terribly in school testing compared to whites and Asians. If you look at our jails, it's predominantly minorities, " Bloomberg said. "If you look at where crime takes place, it's in minority neighborhoods. If you look at who the victims and the perpetrators are, it's virtually all minorities, " Bloomberg continued. "This is something that has gone on for a long time, I assume it's prevalent elsewhere but it's certainly true in New York City. " Bloomberg touted his administration's work to reduce the crime rate, which he credited in this interview to diversifying the police force, saying that it was "particularly important to black and Latino kids and their families and neighborhoods, because that's where the crime is. "
