Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2013 After Gi-tae's death, his father begins to search for answers by contacting his best friends, Hee-joon and Dong-yoon; one switched schools weeks before Gi-tae's death and the other didn't show up to the funeral. Bleak Night is a magnificent, all-too-real drama. The story in this film is bleak; the subject is sad and realistic, and the atmosphere it builds is tense and dreadful. We know the outcome from the start, but we don't know the cause. We witness a strong friendship crumble in the span of weeks; it may be painful to watch, and it just hurts more towards the end. The end is magnificent and bittersweet. This is a film that works solely of its engaging and immersive dialogue; no need for action when conversations/arguments can keep you at the edge of your seat. It moves at a moderate pace, occasionally it can feel slow. Music hardly play in this film, but when it does, it matches the mood perfectly; I loved the song at the credits, as well.
