Leur amour apparaît comme quelque chose d'inné. Attendris par cette affection mutuelle, leurs parents ne s'en formalisent étonnamment pas, et y voient là les racines d'un bel amour fraternel. Une situation qui embarrasse toutefois leur oncle, abbé de Tourlaville, qui perçoit très vite le caractère défendu de leur relation. Les deux amoureux sont séparés: Julien est envoyé aux quatre coins de l'Europe pour ses études pendant dix ans, tandis que Marguerite reste confinée au château. Malgré les années, leur passion ne fait que s'accentuer. Et le château des Ravalet de nouveau au complet est bientôt le théâtre de nouveaux jeux interdits, cette fois pris sur le fait. Situation qui ne manque pas de faire scandale et remonte jusqu'aux oreilles des nombreux prétendants de Marguerite… Contrairement à ce que l'on aurait pu imaginer, Marguerite et Julien ne cherche pas l'irrévérence, si ce n'est exposer quelques dilemmes moraux.
