Ob das auch Jankovics' Inspiration war, muss offen bleiben, man mag sich aber gerne vorstellen, wie "Sohn der weißen Stute" Anfang der 80er Jahre hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang gewirkt haben mag. Wie bei so vielen dort entstandenen Filmen konnte auch Jankovics nicht unmittelbar an den gesellschaftlichen Zuständen Kritik üben, sondern musste verklausuliert vorgehen. Was anfangs noch einer zeitlosen Märchenerzählung gleicht, wird, spätestens wenn in der Unterwelt Drachen auftauchen, auch zu einer Reflexion über die Moderne, Krieg und Zerstörung. Nicht an klassische, echsenartige Wesen erinnern die hier gezeigten Drachen, sondern teils an Panzer, teils an vieltürmige Hochhäuser, die sich den Helden in den Weg stellen. Doch auch wenn man diese Momente leicht ideologisch interpretieren kann: In erster Linie erzählt "Sohn der weißen Stute" vom universellen, zeitlosen Kampf des Guten gegen das Böse. Vor allem aber ist die Handlung nur der lose Aufhänger für einen Film, der auf atemberaubende experimentelle Weise die Möglichkeiten auslotet, eine Geschichte in erster Linie in Bildern zu erzählen, weniger auf den Intellekt zu zielen als auf Emotionen und Sinne.
