Andy never loses hope and he really "gets busy living", because he knows that as long as his mind is free and as long as he has still hope, he will never really be a "prisoner". The success of the screenplay and the dirctor can be found in having perfectly managed to arouse complete empathy in the viewer towards a prisoner like Red, who has never denied his actions and who, thanks to Andy, has understood that the conditional release will never be what will make him free, but the awareness, of no longer being that man capable of killing other human beings, has led him to be truly free. It's quite a pity that Morgan Freeman didn't get an Oscar or a Golden Globe for his performance, however he had to contend with a Tom Hanks who brought one of his most famous performances to theaters: Forrest Gump.

Shawshank Redemption is well made, and well shot with pretty good performances from the majority of the cast with Tim Robbins giving a, in my opinion, over dramatic performance.
