while the nonstop misery (literally nothing even remotely positive happens until the end) does become redundant, i still found the movie interesting all the way through. the movie illustrates the CURSE of being black in the deep south during the 80s-90s. my grandma grew up in mississippi and the tales of her childhood sound pretty much fucking horrifying??? i wonder how the black ppl didnt go extinct from mass suicide but ok. anyways, the movie is clever in that it's comparing reality to a curse. i think it gets the message across, even if it's somewhat of a slideshow. It's not very promising in the beginning, but once it jumps forward and everything starts to unravel, it's truly something to watch. So many things I can relate to, so many things I'm happy not to be able to. It's morose, but elegant. There are some hackneyed elements inherent to black family dramas, but this has all the nuance and authentic writing those films typically lack. Wish there was more compelling dialogue, not to say it was bad, though.

The script is expansive, yet it handles many characters so well, more showing than telling. So bittersweet. This is such a beautiful and heartbreaking movie. With the exception of maybe like one scene that was a little heavier handed than it needed to be, it is for the most part telling a story and never a message. Privilege or the lack of it isn't a message, and it's never one thing. This story of a family is laced with abuse and pervasive poverty and sexual assault and addictions and what cycles of these things do to generations. But it is also about how much they love each other, how that is the thing that holds them together for better and for worse. It is a really good movie. I recommend it. Achingly sad movie about poverty and the human condition. Writer and director Tina Mabry captures perfectly what life is like, growing up poor and black, in rural Mississippi. this movie hurts my fucking soul when tessa thompson got into nyu i teared up Tina Mabry allowed us to take a closer look into her autobiographical story.

Charlie goes to prison for stabbing her boyfriend's mistress. I guess I kept watching this movie because I was hoping that there would be a redeeming ending. That even though this family has gone through a lot, that there would be some hope for them. The film ends with Kari's aunt dying but leaving her a check for $25, 000. Kari is then accepted to New York University and drives off to college, leaving her troubles behind. It's interesting to me that all of the cast is dark skinned, except for Kari. Typically dark skinned black actors play a villain, and the light skinned black person usually has some redeeming factor; this seemed to be the case for Mississippi Damned. Kari is the only one that has a chance to make something of herself. Even though in the film Sammy went on to become an NBA star, he gets injured and has to come back to Mississippi where things don't play out well for him. Overall this film has adamant acting, but that is not enough to make up for the lack of story and direction.

Tina Mabry's feature film debut, "Mississippi Damned" - a 2009 Slamdance Film Festival selection - has been released by AFFRM + Array Releasing today, September 1, on Netflix. Streaming subscribers of the popular online platform can now screen the acclaimed drama there. The award-winning stark drama features an ensemble cast, and follows the dreams and disappointments of 3 African American children in poor rural Mississippi. Struggling to overcome the cyclical violence and poverty at home, each hopes for a brighter future: Leigh with her flirtatious high school girlfriend; Sammy, who has a college basketball scholarship; and Kari, the youngest, considering a career as a pianist.
