The World's End is a 2013 British comic science fiction film directed by Edgar Wright, written by Wright and Simon Pegg, and starring Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike and Eddie Marsan. The film follows a group of friends who discover an alien invasion during an epic pub crawl in their home town. Wright has described the film as "social science fiction" in the tradition of John Wyndham and Samuel Youd (John Christopher). It is the third and final film in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, following Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). This episode bounced around a lot and started putting pieces into place more than telling a single story. I'm going to recap this one by person rather than in linear progression. It will be easier to follow and less jumping around like the show did. Starting off, Jefferson ( Cress Williams) arrives at school to find a kid freaking out on a new kind of drug called Green Light. The kid has increased strength and Jefferson has to blast him twice to put him down. He takes the drugs to Gambi ( James Remar), who learns that the pills are extremely addictive on just one use. Black Lightning hits the streets and gets a name, 2-Bits, a guy Jefferson new back in high school. He tries to approach 2-Bits ( Jason Louder) as a friend, but gets nowhere, so Black Lightning goes back and threatens the guy. 2-Bit pleads for a chance, to not be given to the cops for his third strike, which would put him away for 30 years.

The drama is based on a Turkish book and she pleaded with me to find an English translation (if you know Filipino mothers, you will know the power of their soulful dark eyes and singsong voices). I figured the task would be an easy one, and the perfect Christmas present. On Netflix, the drama is called Lovebird in English and Çalikuşu in Turkish. A bit of digging online revealed that Çalikuşu actually means "wren" and that the book is a Turkish classic written by Reşat Nuri Güntekin in 1922. An English translation by Sir Wyndham Deedes was written in 1949 but I could not find any available hardcopies. More digging, however, led me to an online file of the English translation, on which I spent many post-workday evenings manually typing it up and formatting it into a manuscript. Mission accomplished! I printed an actual physical book for my overjoyed mother that Christmas. But I wasn't fully content. My investigation also revealed that the English translation was incomplete. Fortunately, my engineering colleague and good Turkish friend, Tugrul Zure, was willing to check.
