Même si cela s'améliore au fil du récit, le film manque de maîtrise technique, notamment au niveau de l'image, du cadrage et de la lumière, qui aurait permis aux spectateurs de se plonger totalement dans le passé. L'action se déroule dans les années 60 et pourtant, on n'y croit pas une seconde. Côté distribution, la majorité des enfants ont su jouer de manière juste, mis à part le personnage de Lebrac qui sonne faux et tombe dans le sur-jeu. Or, la justesse ne fait pas tout. Les personnages sont tous caractérisés (le chef courageux, le petit maladroit, le second intellectuel, …) mais manquent d'âme et de consistance, empêchant ainsi un attachement émotionnel ou une quelconque empathie. La présence des adultes n'envahit pas trop le récit et permet de laisser régner une ambiance légère malgré les faits historiques (guerre d'Algérie). La scène de dispute entre Eric Elmosnino ( Gainsbourg) et Alain Chabat ( Chouchou, Didier) est un tantinet longue et semble avoir été placée là pour justifier une participation exceptionnelle et un effet de casting (Mathilde Seigner, Fred Testot).
