We flash back to Joseon, 1871. Eugene (given name: Yoo-jin) is a nine-year-old slave to a local aristocrat who wants to rise in the ranks. His father and mother are called out by the lord for trying to escape, so Yoo-jin's mother takes the lord's daughter hostage and urges her son to escape. After a dramatic goodbye, he does, taking refuge in the shop of a pottery maker. Meanwhile, war is raging in the countryside. The Americans want to open up trade to the region, but the locals think the Americans are barbarians, and members of the aristocracy take pains to force the Americans into a war footing. In the battle, 200 Joseon soldiers are killed, and the main diplomat tries to sell the region to Japan. The incident is known to Koreans as Shinmiyangyo, and it's the first military action between the two nations. Yoo-jin gets smuggled into New York by an American gentleman looking for goods to sell at home. He lives a hard life, constantly bullied, until as a teenager, he sees soldiers walking through the city.
He went on to tell Korea Times: "My character is very interesting in that he is an American who harbours hard feelings toward his own country Joseon. " The star, whose previous credits include Hollywood blockbusters G. I. Joe and The Magnificent Seven, added: "Many of the global viewers may watch the drama with limited knowledge of that historical time period. But drama is about the unfolding of human relationships in the end. "So, although the series is based on Korean history, foreign viewers will be able to understand the feelings and emotions through the characters and their relationships.
