Fue en este estado de ánimo que Gericault se puso a pintar su obra. Hay muchísimas otras historias de naufragio famosas en la historia del arte, pues, como se ha dicho, es un tema extraordinariamente sugerente. La novela clásica sobre naufragio es Robinson Crusoe, de Daniel Defoe, que se basó en un caso real.
