Fra le numerose riduzioni cinematografiche dedicate alla mitica saga di Re Artù e dei cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda, Excalibur resta senza dubbio una delle più famose e riuscite. Sceneggiato, prodotto e diretto nel 1981 dal regista inglese John Boorman ( Un tranquillo week-end di paura) e girato nei suggestivi paesaggi della campagna irlandese, il film è ispirato al classico di Thomas Malory La morte d'Arthur, che raccoglieva le varie leggende del ciclo di Camelot per raccontare le imprese di Re Artù e dei suoi cavalieri. In questo adattamento per il grande schermo, Boorman ha scelto di porre in evidenza l'aspetto mitico / fantastico rispetto a quello prettamente storico; il risultato è un kolossal d'autore affascinante e spettacolare, che riesce a fondere mirabilmente le esigenze di intrattenimento con il gusto per la narrazione epica e ci trasporta in un Medioevo pagano ed ancestrale, dominato dalla magia e dalle arti occulte. Le vicende di Excalibur risalgono all'antefatto della fondazione di Camelot, partendo dalla storia di Uther Pendragon (Gabriel Byrne), per poi ripercorrere nell'arco di oltre due ore di durata l'intera vita di Re Artù (Nigel Terry): dall'estrazione della favolosa "spada nella roccia" alla sua morte in battaglia, passando per il matrimonio con Ginevra (Cherie Lunghi), l'istituzione della Tavola Rotonda, il tradimento di Lancillotto (Nicholas Clay) e la ricerca del Graal.
One of the local police tries to give the oldest boy a break due to having feelings for their mom. This doesn't go over well at all. The youngest boy, his new neighbor who he has a science project with and his friends go out in the woods to search for UFO's and anything weird. They find a strange slime and bring it home to study. As the youngest teen is working on their science project, his brother finds him with a book of their father's and messes with the science project causing a shake to spill all over it. While the boy sleeps, a chemical reaction continues from the slime like substance and a little creature is created. The story takes off from here as the boy tries to keep the creature hidden while he grows larger every day. The military is involved somehow but nobody knows how and believe there's a coverup as the town's people continue to fall ill and die. The boys work on figuring out the links between the UFO's, the Military and the Dinosaur/Creature. There are parts where you can really tell the amateur work but overall it is good.
Rajoutez d'autres séries comme ça + des films en accès permanent (de plus de 3 ans donc: ils ont des partenariats avec Warner, Disney et Sony je crois, ça fait déjà pas mal), je pense d'ailleurs qu'ils peuvent combiner ça avec leur télévision de rattrapage (où on peut voir un film pendant 30 jours après sa diffusion) pour les films plus récents qui sont ainsi accessibles. Si ces 2 là font un effort sur le catalogue, ils peuvent peut-être s'implanter fortement avant l'arrivée des géants américains. Le modèle Netflix peut vraiment être mis en danger facilement par les studios qui ont juste à lui enlever leurs catalogues de séries et films pour pourquoi pas monter directement le leur. Néanmoins, il faudrait qu'ils s'allient car je vois mal les gens souscrire à un service Studio Canal, un service Disney, un service Warner et se dire je veux voir ce film, ah, c'est un film Paramount je peux pas (d'un côté, c'est ce qui se passe puisque Netflix signe des contrats avec les studios donc si le studio signe pas... ).
Nella prima parte del film Boorman opta per un ritmo rapido e avventuroso, per poi soffermarsi invece su tematiche più complesse, quali il rapporto fra etica e potere e la difficoltà nel conciliare responsabilità pubbliche e sentimenti privati; nell'ultima parte, nella quale viene rappresentato il declino di Camelot, la pellicola assume invece un tono più crepuscolare e decadente, con alcune sequenze addirittura dal carattere visionario. I vari protagonisti, lungi dall'essere semplici figure stereotipate, hanno ciascuno una personalità ben definita: lo stesso Artù ci viene descritto innanzitutto come un essere umano dotato di virtù e debolezze, che ha un continuo bisogno dei saggi consigli di mago Merlino (Nicol Williamson). Ed è proprio Merlino il personaggio più emblematico e significativo del film: un vecchio stregone tormentato dal peso del suo potere e della sua onniscienza, che assiste con sguardo disincantato al tramonto ineluttabile della propria epoca e all'avvento dell'età degli uomini, fino a restare sopraffatto dagli intrighi della sua astuta apprendista Morgana (Helen Mirren).
